Not all 'vacant' land needs developing
Congratulations to the Mercury for the ongoing updates and exposure of events regarding Killalea State Park.
Sarah Allely has done good work unearthing information about the trust's dealings on the matter.
Everyone will have to decide for themselves if there is a "champion for the environment in there".
We understand there is no short-term fix, after all Killalea is just "native, vacant land, just an old dairy farm", we are told.
It's just waiting 200 years for a secret deal to turn it into Santa's gift for the kids of the Illawarra.
Nothing is wrong with throwing a few rocks to achieve the right outcomes for this one. It might be advisable to spare the pollies at this stage, but be assured they will change jerseys when the winning goals are scored and be there for the presentations.
Maybe the trust needs some other options for native vacant land, such as completing the picture around Wollongong Lighthouse - it's prime and good access for builders, not much to move, some old cannons and an old sailors' warning light.
There's always back-ups but more travelling. Could it be Minnumurra Falls, or Seven Mile Beach, or Honeymoon Bay? All wide open and underdeveloped since time began.
Anyway, it's nice to know most people want remnants of natural land to remain forever, as they are. Save Killalea.
Gary McKenzie, Wollongong.
