Mayoral Opinion on Killalea

Shellharbour Mayor David Hamilton has stepped off the fence and voiced his opposition to the 52 year lease of the Killalea State Park to a private developer.

However, the mayor believes the trust should develop the site, amid claims entry fees could sky-rocket to $25.

On Killalea, the mayor says he's taken a wait and see approach.

And after a briefing from the developers and the Killalea State Trust last month, the mayor has taken a side.

The State Government has signed a development agreement to lease three parcels of land to construct a tourism resort with more than 200 cabins.

But the mayor says he was told at the briefing the park's entry fee, which is currently free, could be boosted to up to $25.

The mayor is pushing for the trust to instead develop the resort, with income to go toward maintaining the park.

Kiama Mayor Sandra MacCarthy has come out in support of her neighbouring colleague suggesting she will also report to her next council meeting, the community concerns surrounding the lease.

However Lands Minister, Tony Kelly has dismissed the mayors' concerns saying it will have no impact on the Government's position.
