Local surfers speak against Killalea DA
Local surfers from the Southbridge Boardriders Club have added their names to the growing list of disgruntled residents against the proposed resort at Killalea State Park.
Club President Colin Gow, who has spent many years competing and judging internationally, is concerned about the impact the large-scale development will have on the area.
“I’ve travelled the world and not seen a more pristine area,” he said.
“It’s unique in surfing terms because it is a classic south east facing beach break.”
“If the developers get their way with accommodation, restaurants, pools and the like, it will take away from the surfing experience that is ‘The Farm’.”
“It is a very natural environment.”
Mr Gow, who has been surfing at the Farm since 1963, is also very keen on junior development and is eager to pass on his vast knowledge and experience to the younger generation of local surfers.
“I’d hate to see this public land turned over to developers and deprive the next generation of surfers of the unique experience of surfing at the Farm,” Mr Gow said.
“We’re a family club and encourage members from all walks of life from grommets to veterans.”
As the developer launches the first stage of community consultation, Mr Gow has thrown out a challenge to other local surfing groups to get “on board” before it’s “too late.”
“It’s up to all of us to let the government know that we don’t want this in our backyard,” he said.
