EDITORIAL: A matter of trust

THE bickering between Shellharbour City Council and Killalea State Park Trust should not be dismissed as trivial or an exercise in one-upmanship.

Shellharbour Mayor David Hamilton has accused the trust of thumbing its nose at the council over development plans for the park.

He has demanded more information from the trust after it provided council with scant details of its June and July meeting.

Councillor Hamilton has now asked for the trust's audit reports and encouraged other councillors to ask questions.

This is a fair call because controversy has raged for months over plans to develop parts of Killalea based on fears development will diminish the natural beauty of the area.

A breakdown in the relationship between the council and the trust over a perceived withholding of information will only add to these fears.

Openness and detailed information is, therefore, essential if the trust wants to win the confidence of the community.

Council, after all, represents the community, and it is up to the trust to treat it with respect.
