A statewide SOS over Killalea plan

By SARAH ALLELY

KIAMA councillors will seek statewide support to stop plans to lease land at Killalea State Park.

At an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday night Kiama Municipal Council voted to submit a number of motions to the Local Government Association of NSW annual conference in October.

These include motions about development plans at Killalea, the coastal park between Shellharbour and Kiama boasting surf beaches The Farm and Mystics.

On April 30, NSW Lands Minister Tony Kelly signed an agreement to lease three parcels of park land for 52 years to Killalea Coastal Investments, a joint venture between Mariner Financial and Babcock & Brown.

It allows 202 residential lodges, swimming pools, tennis courts, restaurants and a conference centre.

The council will request that the Local Government Association campaign against the plans to effectively "privatise" crown lands, particularly state parks, through the use of long-term leases to private companies.

Councillors will specifically seek support to stop the proposal to lease Killalea land to a private company.

The motion put to NSW councils will ask that the association consider such proposals "contrary to the objectives of state parks as places of recreation for the community and converts them into fundraising tools for the Department of Lands".

Kiama councillors will ask the Local Government Association to invite community groups working against the proposal to assist in its submissions to State Government.
