Government to look at Farm reserve

By SARAH ALLELY

THE NSW Government has suggested making The Farm's iconic surfing status formal, says Killalea State Park Trust chair Ed Gilmore.

Mr Gilmore said a report would go to the next trust meeting about discussions between the trust and the Department of Lands to look at making Killalea Beach a National Surfing Reserve.

He said the director-general raised the issue at a trust meeting in May.

"It is our desire to establish surfing as a primary use and have the water and waves off Killalea Beach legally protected as a reserve for surfing," Mr Gilmore said.

"It is a first for a state park in NSW."

The Mercury reported last month on Illawarra surfer Chris Homer's attempt to nominate The Farm for legal protection.

Mr Homer's request was presented to the National Surfing Reserve Committee Australia by deputy chair Professor Andrew Short.

The University of Sydney geology professor and coastal studies unit director said he had visited every Australian beach, and The Farm stood out as an "iconic site" with its rare south-facing break.

But Prof Short told the Mercury after the meeting that the committee was inundated with nominations and had pressed pause to draw up strict guidelines.

NSW Lands Minister Tony Kelly gazetted the state's first surf reserve at Angourie near Yamba in January under the Crown Lands Act.
