Killalea Park protection is a matter of Trust
Good morning, fellow citizens of the South Coast who believe that tiny Killalea State Park should be forever preserved as the increasingly scarce open public recreation area that it is intended to be and not transformed into some private tourist resort with 200 lodges, swimming pools, tennis courts, conference centres and who knows what other touristy playthings it is intended to carve into its grassy spaces.
Today, you need to know that while you were sleeping, warmly assuming that a Trust existed to manage and protect Killalea from just this sort of atrocity, it has been confirmed that this Trust has signed off, and locked itself into, turning Killalea into that large-scale private tourist resort.
We are now being told that the totally misnamed Trust has been working on it for years. It would have been nice if the community had been properly consulted before either the concept was germinated or even before any contracts were signed. Neither the Trust nor the State Government own Killalea, the people do. It's not theirs to flog off.
No wonder that the Trust and the local MPs have been so shy in answering questions from the community and the mayors.
Just one of the companies gleefully accepting the 52-year lease of our scarce jewel of public recreation space is Babcock & Brown, a company bigger than Macquarie Bank. So prepare for the newsletters, glossy brochures, the smooth reassurances and the earnest but theatrical public consultation.
While the community cannot possibly match the financial resources of the developers in this battle to save Killalea, their money will not be able to counter the fact that the majority of our community is opposed to this proposed destruction of our Killalea State Park.
