A LAST-DITCH stand to save Killalea State Park from private development has been quashed by the State Government.
Shellharbour Mayor David Hamilton had suggested his council could take over control of the park from the Killalea Trust.
He said funding for maintenance would be generated from limited park development.
But yesterday NSW Lands Minister Tony Kelly said Councillor Hamilton would have to prove there was popular support for the plan through a referendum before it would be considered.
