Opportunity for pollies to listen to the people
It is rare for politicians to be visionary. It is far easier for them to take the expedient view, or short term view, as is the clear case with local members Matt Brown and Lylea McMahon when it comes to Killalea State Park.
Well, it is clear that the visionary view of their constituents is that Killalea should not be flogged off for a private tourist resort but preserved forever as a place for peaceful public recreation, as shown by 15,000 petition signatures, the public meetings called by the union movement and the diverse group of concerned citizens within the Save Killalea Alliance, the constant river of letters to the editor and general buzz of concern in the community.
Lylea McMahon attempts to avoid this matter by the disingenuous claim that it is not her electorate when thousands of her constituents live next to, and enjoy using, Killalea. Poor form indeed.
Why won't these local politicians or the Lands Minister, Tony Kelly, take up the invitations to front the public meetings about Killalea? Are they that afraid of what they'll hear. Are they that dismissive of their constituents' concerns?
Next Tuesday at 6.30pm at the Links Golf Club, Shell Cove provides them with an opportunity to show a bit more accountability - and to do what they were elected to do - listen to the people that put them there.
