Surveyors at Killalea

By MARIO CHRISTODOULOU

SURVEYORS were seen at Killalea State Park last Wednesday, sparking anger among activists who oppose development in the park.

The State Government agreed to lease part of the land to developers for a period of 52 years.

The developer behind the plan said the surveyors were taking measurements in preparation for final designs, which are yet to be submitted.

Yesterday a spokesman from developer Killalea Coastal Investments, a joint venture between Mariner Financial and Babcock & Brown, said the surveyors were conducting standard work commonly undertaken in the lead-up to a development application.

"The work was completely routine to get elevation levels and typographical measurements," he said.

But the Save Killalea Alliance was angry after seeing the surveyors, with spokeswoman Sonya McKay saying the development in the park is not supported by the community.

"We feel as if they should stop pursuing the development application given the amount of opposition to it," she said.

The matter comes as the State Government considers legislation which would see more commercial activity occurring in parks and conservation areas.
