Letter of the Day

FELLOW citizens, it is clearly federal election time.  Politicians are rampant in all media trying to get their message across.

Like flushed pheasants, they are almost blotting out the sun with their fervour to gain your attention.

All hospital patients, lounging in their jammies, must have added to their suffering the distinct possibility that, at any moment, a politician might appear in their ward accompanied by a group of photographers and reporters and the danger of public exploitation on national television.

In extremis, politicians are combing every centimetre of the country seeking such disarmed quarry.

But what about our slater-like state pollies at this time?  Take the outrageous "large-scale tourist resort" the State Government proposes for tiny Killalea State Park as an example.

This is the first in the four-year term of the present State Government.  And getting a local state politician to appear in public is harder than scratching that small itchy part in the middle of your back.

There have been no less than four public meetings on the potent matter of the proposal by the State Government to sell off Killalea to a private company, on a 52-year lease, since the state election.

How many local state pollies have attended these four public meetings?  The answer is zero.

In the old days, politicians would stampede to public meetings, rearrange their diaries, and unashamedly push people aside for the golden opportunity such public meetings afforded to spruik their policies.

Shamefully, local state MPs Matt Brown and Lylea McMahon now quiveringly avoid such intimate accountability to the constituents who elected them.

Or are they just ashamed at this short-sighted atrocity planned for the community's magnificent Killalea State Park?
