Mercury duo wins journalism prizes

THE Illawarra Mercury has snared two prizes at the inaugural South East Regional Media Awards.

Reporter Sarah Allely won the Award for Excellence in Print Journalism for her coverage of the controversial development plans for Killalea State Park.

The award recognises "the important role of the local newspaper to the community and the high standards of journalism that have been practised for many decades in our regional communities".

Sub-editor Duncan Abey won the Award for the Best Three Headings.

The award "recognises the role played by sub-editors in attracting the reader to a particular article in a newspaper".

The awards, run by the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, were open to all non-capital-city newsrooms in southern NSW, Victoria and eastern South Australia.
