Another 200 people are reported to have turned up for a barbecue at Killalea, to protest the proposed development of what is little more than holiday cottages on what is disused farmland.
So what are they seeking to save Killalea from? The conversion of land currently not being utilised as recreation area to recreation area? The possibility visitors from out of the district can now come and enjoy the national park, where their kids can enjoy the environment as those protesting have in the past?
Or is it to protect those who have bought or (are) selling land bordering the park with the vista overlooking Killalea, as advertised by Shellharbour council in part, in a full page spread in Saturday's Illawarra Mercury?
The protesters are not saving The Farm beach, nor the lagoon behind it, nor the beach to the south, as these areas are not being developed other than (for) improved ecological access. They are not saving access for the public as the public will still have access.
Regrettably the development is necessary for the public to continue to enjoy the park. What we should be seeking is the master plan that enhances and restores the best features of the park, whilst catering for an increasing number of visitors, to share with us the beauty and enjoyment of the place.
