Southbridge head down to Farm

Mick Mathesius goes right during Southbridge Boardriders’ October pointscore

A ONE-METRE swell, good banks and an all-day off-shore wind combined to produce near perfect conditions for Southbridge Boardrider’s October pointscore at The Farm on Sunday.

Record numbers of nearly 40 surfers called for a twenty-plus heat event which ran like clockwork thanks to the club’s new, state-of-the-art timing system.

The consistent conditions allowed for some stand-out performances throughout the day.

Southbridge newcomers Mark Elkerton and Shaun Langlands won the Junior and Senior Final with Josh Szele, Brett Connellan and Mick Mathesius having convincing wins in the Cadets, Opens and Masters Divisions.

This pointscore, held in support of the ‘Save Killalea Day Of Protest’, helped showcase The Farm’s legendary status as one of the east coast’s most unique surf spots.

This beautiful, near-pristine, south-facing beach has been used for both recreational and competitive surfing for at least half a century, due to its ability to attract swell and provide off-shore conditions during prevailing summer north-easterly winds.

This season is shaping up to be a great one for the club, now in its 29th year, with membership increasing every month.

The club holds its pointscores on the last Sunday of each month, meeting at George Street, Warilla Beach at 7am.

New members are always welcome and the club is keen to recruit female surfers in all age divisions as well as junior men.
