SHELLHARBOUR City Council says neighbours Kiama Municipal Council should play an active role in assessing the proposed development within Killalea State Park.
Earlier
this year Lands Minister Tony Kelly rejected the nomination of Kiama council's
deputy mayor Ben van der Wijngaart to the Killalea State Park Trust, saying it
was "inappropriate" given Cr van der Wijngaart's history of
campaigning against the development.
Mr
Kelly also ruled Kiama's position on the trust would be abolished because
Killalea State Park was located outside its local government area.
However,
in a submission to the Department of Planning on September 7, Shellharbour
council argued "Kiama Municipal Council should be afforded equal
participation in the community engagement process".
Cr
van der Wijngaart welcomed the position, saying Kiama had been shut out of the
process because of a dissenting view.
"The
fact is the Kiama municipality borders on the edge of the park, our residents
enjoy the park and the council has always had a positive role to play in the
park," Cr van der Wijngaart said.
Sonya
McKay of the Illawarra Community and Environment Connection said a meeting would
be held at 7.15pm on Monday at the Albion Park Bowling and Recreation Club to
discuss the proposal.
Meantime,
the NSW Government's support for a proposed development within the park has been
labelled "a death wish" by Greens MLC Sylvia Hale.
