KILLALEA STATE PARK & BEACH

Situated near Shellharbour (approx 90 mins South of Sydney) and named after our ancestor and Shellharbour Councillor - Edward Killalea.

The park covers an area of approx 250 hectares and is visited by many tourists and holiday makers.

This page of Killalea State Park photos is now dedicated to the memory of Leanne Kellalea who has been our main Killalea researcher and family reunion organiser for many years.  Sadly Leanne lost her long battle with cancer on 17th of June 2010 and will be greatly missed by the entire Killalea family in Australia and around the World.

Leanne always hoped to see the day that Killalea State Park would be saved from any development and text back "Fantastic News" when she was notified of the announcement that it was saved.  She was unable to speak by that stage of her illness but was delighted with the outcome.  Throughout her long cancer battle she kept going as long as she could with providing information about what was happening regarding Killalea State Park which appeared on the "Killalea Protest" page of this site for family members to read.

There is no doubt we will all have to remain vigilant and again take up the battle to save this natural scenic park from development for Leanne's sake if there is any such future proposals.  Should any development ever be allowed which blocks the natural views available there now the main attraction of the place would be totally lost for ever.

Other involvement Leanne had with projects at Killalea State Park

A very interesting book called "KILLALEA"  "A European History of Killalea State Recreation Area" gives a lot of information about the area and an insight into the lives of Edward and Maria Killalea for any interested family members.  The book was researched and compiled by the participants of a New Work Opportunity Program funded by the Department of Employment, Education and Training and sponsored by Southern Skills Training Company Incorporated.  The Co-ordinator, Training and Development Officer for the project was Sonia Bianchotti and it was first published in 1996.   Leanne provided quite a lot of Killalea family information and old photos for the project.  In return the group provided Leanne with additional information about the Killalea family which they had come across locally with their research.

The Killalea name appears elsewhere around Shellharbour

killaleaburger

From when Cec Hore found out that his surname should have been Killalea and that he descended from Edward and Maria Killalea he had a real desire to visit Killalea State Park before he died.  Cec's grandfather John Killalea was probably born at "The Farm" where the family plaque is now located.

Cec visited the Park in 2007 and although in his 80's he really enjoyed seeing both Killalea State Park and Killalea Beach.  He was also surprised to find a "Killalea Burger" on the menu at the Shellharbour Worker's Club and had to try one being a retired chef himself.  He gave it a rating of 10 out of 10 and recommends it to all the family to try.

TRIBUTES TO LEANNE & OTHER PERSONAL MESSAGES:

This is the poem Leanne wanted read out at her funeral and the wording is so typical of her attitude to life.

Leanne's last walk on Killalea Beach
THE DASH
I read of a man who stood to speak, at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone, from the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came the date of birth, and spoke of the following date with tears.
But he said what mattered most of all, was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time, that she spent alive on Earth,
And now only those who loved her, know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;  the cars... the house... the cash,
What matters is how we live and love, and how we spend our dash.

So when your eulogy's being read, with your life's actions to rehash,
Would you be proud of the things they say, about how you spent your dash?

Many people will walk in and out of our life, but Leanne has left her footprint in our hearts.  Leanne was one of those rare people who gave her all and made people feel welcome and wanted and that applies to me.

Her relentless efforts in researching the Killalea family tree is amazing.  I am so proud to be added to the Killalea family tree and I am grateful to Leanne for giving us a connection to other family members who otherwise we would have never known.

Valmai Helen Raper
Our thoughts, prayers and best wishes are extended to her family, she is a good role model for them with the time and effort spent in bringing the extended Killalea families together over the years, a job well done.

Leanne gave me a Gift I shall always cherish, she answered a question I had wanted to know for a long time.  "Where do I come from"?

Leanne almost moved mountains to achieve her Goal….a very driven, strong, intelligent woman.

Please pass on my condolences to Leanne's family, thank God she is now at peace.

Leanne's determination was shown with her search to find why my grandfather (Joseph Killalea) was raised as Joe Hore.  She ended up with a database of over 7,500 descendants of John Hoare & Elizabeth Love.  Leanne graciously handed all this information over to others researching the Hoare/Hore, Love & Seymour lines.  Also pioneer families of the Illawarra area.

These families will also remember Leanne.
Terry Killalea-Hore
What a sad end!  I hope she managed to complete the family
history that she had dedicated so much time to.  I'd certainly like to have a chance to see it one day.

Please pass on my best wishes to her close family.

Kind regards
Graham Lewis
