OTHER KNOWN INFORMATION OR COMMENTS:- Some of the information about Thomas was provided to me by Allen Seymour.
Additional information was provided to me by Marion Starr who has written a book titled :- "Murder, Mayhem & Misdemeanours - Early Settlers at the Cowpastures River NSW 1810 - 1830" Thomas is mentioned on pages 8, 120, 121, 181, 186, 187, 191, 233, 239, 240, 241, 244, 261, 263, 264. Information about the vessel "Admiral Gambier (2)" which he came to Australia on can be found on pages 8, 145, 146, 160, 181, 192, 240, 244. The book also mentions over 120 people living in that area at the time giving details about them and the ship they arrived here on, stories of life back in that era, shows maps of land grants and references to where all the information was obtained from.
In the book Thomas is described as being five feet, ten inches tall with black hair, hazel eyes and a dark ruddy complexion. After a brief career as a butcher he was caught stealing a horse. Thomas was sentenced to death but he was transported to Australia for "Life". After several years on a prison hulk he left England as a convict and arrived in Australia 29th September 1811 on the "Admiral Gambier". He was one of 200 convicts on that ship. He was assigned to Sergeant Robert Higgins (Mary's Father) at Upper Minto, NSW's. Thomas's first "Ticket of Leave" was issued on 31st January 1815 for the Liverpool district. By 1829 he was a settler at Upper Minto and his wife Mary had left him and was living with William Ryan. After 30 years as a convict, Thomas was finally granted a "Conditional Pardon" on 1st October 1839 which granted him freedom within the Colony but he couldn't return to England.
Marion Starr is quite happy for others to contact her regarding the Seymour line as she has carried out extensive research as well as having written the above mentioned book which also contains biographies for all the Higgins family and other related families. Marion can be contacted by selecting :- e-mail Marion
